Sorta in epoca medioevale sopra i resti dell'antica struttura romana risalente al II secolo, e della quale ricalca e conserva ancora oggi la forma ellittica, Piazza dell'Anfiteatro costituisce il cuore intimo e suggestivo della città; l'attuale taglio urbanistico ed edilizio, risalente all'800, lo si deve all'opera dell'architetto lucchese Lorenzo Nottolini il quale liberò lo spazio interno all'arena dalle tante piccole costruzioni edificate nei secoli per i più disparati utilizzi e disegnò la via dell'anfiteatro che ne ripercorre all'esterno il profilo ellittico ...
