Il girasole, Helianthus annuus è una pianta annuale. Il nome deriva da helios, il dio sole, e anthos, fiore. Com'è noto la sua caratteristica è quella di girare il capolino verso il Sole, per questo, e per il suo colore giallo splendente, è un fiore associato alla solarità, all'allegria, al calore estivo che ci rende inclini alla spensieratezza. In alcune tradizioni simboleggia anche la gratitudine e l'ammirazione per qualcuno. Viene talvolta regalato per auspicare la guarigione o in occasione di lauree e altri traguardi decisivi come simbolo di successo. Quello che viene definito il fiore è in realtà il capolino (infiorescenza), composto da un insieme di numerosi fiori. La struttura dei capolini è: un peduncolo ingrossato che sorregge un involucro emisferico villoso composto da più brattee sul quale s'inseriscono due tipi di fiori: quelli esterni, chiamati "fiori dei petali" (da 17 a 30), ligulati per lo più gialli e sono disposti in un unico rango; quelli interni, chiamati "fiori del disco" (fino a 150, ma anche di più), sono tubulosi di colore arancio scuro-bruno. La sistemazione dei fiori all'interno del disco avviene secondo la sezione aurea, ottenendo uno schema a spirali in cui il numero di spirali orarie e di quelle antiorarie sono successivi numeri di Fibonacci. Sul girasole esistono varie leggende, due più diffuse: quella che narra della ninfa Clizia ed il Dio Apollo. Un'altra che preferisco perchè a lieto fine racconta che: “in un bel giardino pieno di fiori un giorno spuntò un fiore strano, che venne subito allontanato dagli altri. Il fiore se ne stava solo soletto, triste ma silenzioso, trascorrendo le proprie giornate a guardare il sole. Lo seguiva in ogni movimento e avrebbe tanto voluto avvicinarlo, per questo provò ad allungarsi sempre più. Finché il Sole non si accorse di lui e gli chiese per quale motivo fosse così solo e triste. Il fiore gli raccontò la sua storia e a quel punto il Sole decise di trasformarlo in un girasole, di colore giallo splendente.
