«Abbiamo voluto accendere un fuoco sulla collina», disse David Tremlett durante l'inaugurazione della Cappella del Barolo, nel settembre 1999. Insieme a Sol LeWitt trasformò quella piccola chiesa mai consacrata - costruita nel 1914 per dare riparo ai lavoratori delle vigne e acquisita nel 1970 dalla famiglia Ceretto insieme a sei ettari del vigneto di Brunate – in un'opera d'arte a cielo aperto. Un arcobaleno di colori nel cuore delle Langhe, un guardiano eccentrico che osserva le colline circostanti perdersi nell'orizzonte. Nato davanti a un bicchiere di Barolo a casa Ceretto, diventò uno dei progetti più importanti delle Langhe. Gli artisti si spartirono gli spazi: le facciate esterne a Sol LeWitt, che le tratteggiò a tinte forti, mentre gli interni a David Tremlett, che stese il colore sulle pareti con le mani, dando vita a riflessi acquei sul pavimento marmoreo. «Non lo penso come chiesa, e neppure come edificio, quadro oppure scultura. Lo penso come oggetto, un'opera d'arte, per la quale usare il colore», raccontò Sol LeWitt nel settembre 1999 a Il giornale dell'arte.
