Si narra che un giorno, nel mese di giugno Proserpina, la bellissima figlia di Giove e della dea della Terra, mentre coglieva fiori in un prato di Sicilia fu rapita da Plutone, dio degli inferi, che volle farla sua sposa. Quando la madre Demetra venne a sapere che la figlia avrebbe trascorso il resto dell'esistenza nel mondo sotterraneo si disperò e corse a chiedere aiuto a Giove che però non fece nulla, cercando addirittura di incoraggiare l'unione della figlia che sarebbe diventata regina. Demetra in preda al dolore decise di non occuparsi più della Terra. A quel punto Giove, preoccupato della morte delle creature, convinse Plutone a lasciar tornare Proserpina per almeno sei mesi ogni anno.
