Arte e cultura Testa di Basilea .All'ingresso della sala che ospita i "Bronzi di Riace" sono esposte due teste bronzee provenienti dal relitto di Porticello (presso Villa San Giovanni). In tale località, nel corso delle operazioni di recupero espletate nel 1969, oltre al carico commerciale di anfore per il trasporto di derrate alimentari, è stato rinvenuto un complesso di bronzi, consistente in diversi frammenti di statue, tra cui due teste virili. Una di esse è nota come "Testa di Basilea", poiché venne acquistata dall'Antikenmuseum della città elvetica; successivamente (1986) venne restituita al governo italiano, in quanto risultata oggetto di un trafugamento illegale da parte di clandestini all'epoca della scoperta del relitto. Sotto l'aspetto stilistico, i suoi tratti, idealizzati, ascrivibili, forse, ad una figura divina o un personaggio regale, fanno supporre che l'opera sia stata realizzata sotto l'influsso di correnti artistiche attiche o peloponnesiache e sia cronologicamente inquadrabile nello stile tardo-severo (metà del V sec. a.C. circa).
