E' una grande conifera che apprezza gli ambienti umidi, molto rustica e longeva (in natura può vivere fino a 1000 anni) poco nota e scarsamente diffusa in Italia.
Cresce spontanea nei terreni paludosi e sulle sponde dei fiumi degli Stati Uniti, soprattutto del Mississipi e Missouri.
