Nel cuore della Basilicata c'è un maestro in pensione che non ha mai smesso di insegnare. Ogni giorno esce di casa e gira in lungo e in largo per tutta la regione, spesso spingendosi anche oltre. Per quarantadue anni maestro di scuola, e in pensione da quattro. "Ma il mio bibliomotocarro è nato nel 1999, quando io ero in servizio. Ed è un'idea che mi porto dietro da tanto tempo", precisa Antonio. Nato a Ferrandina, un paesino nel cuore della Basilicata a trentacinque chilometri da Matera, Antonio ha un'energia travolgente. La sua Ape usata, acquistata nel 2003 e trasformata in una biblioteca itinerante, può ospitare fino a 700 libri. L'arrivo dell'Ape carica di libri viene annunciato a suon di musica. Antonio raggiunge i bambini nei luoghi più frequentati, come i campetti da gioco e le piazzette. Così è riuscito a prestare in media 450 libri alla settimana. "Giro i centotrenta comuni della provincia di Matera, ma anche quelli della Puglia e della Campania.

ROMA – C'è anche Antonio La Cava con il suo “bibliomotocarro” tra le 33 personalità premiate ieri dal presidente della Repubblica, Sergio Mattarella. Al maestro in pensione di Matera è stato riconosciuto il riconoscimento di Commendatore dell'Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana «per l'impegno profuso, nel corso della sua vita, nella promozione del valore della cultura». Da quasi vent'anni, infatti, La Cava, a bordo di uno speciale tre ruote-biblioteca ambulante, porta i libri ai bambini delle scuole elementari dei paesi più piccoli e isolati della Basilicata, dove spesso non ci sono biblioteche o librerie. Un'idea nata nel 1999 per richiamare l'attenzione sulla crescente disaffezione nei confronti del libro da parte, soprattutto, delle nuove generazioni.

La Cava è un uomo umile, umile un po' come il suo Ape car che ha trasformato in libreria ambulante capace di promuovere la cultura dove la cultura di solito non arriva e non riesce a raggiungere i bambini, gli anziani, i migranti, insomma i più deboli. «No, no, non mi sento per nulla un eroe», ha commentato il neo commendatore con l'Ansa dopo aver saputo di essere stato inserito dal presidente Mattarella nella lista degli “eroi normali”. «Sono solo una persona che - dice a bassa voce il 73enne maestro in pensione - si è guardata intorno per fare qualcosa per gli altri e per colmare una lacuna che purtroppo ancora c'è. Educare alla lettura è il primo passo».

Partendo da Ferrandina, ha cominciato a girare per i paesi della Basilicata e di altre regioni, in particolare in quelli a rischio spopolamento, nel 1999, «quando ancora insegnavo alle elementari e quindi potevo farlo solo il sabato e la domenica. Ora invece posso farlo tutti i giorni». Con i suoi oltre mille libri, ha percorso circa 200mila chilometri, di cui 50mila negli ultimi tre anni. E ora sta pensando di acquistare un «fratellino», un altro Ape car, che affiancherà l'originale e che sarà dedicato ai bambini fino ai sei anni.
Ha tante storie da raccontare, il maestro La Cava. Forse la più bella è quella di un bambino di Oliveto Lucano, piccolo paese della provincia di Matera che «non voleva che andassi via e mi chiese: "Quando torni?". Ebbene, la cultura, in quel momento, ha sicuramente conquistato un piccolo lettore». E poi quell'altro bambino di Francavilla in Sinni, nel Potentino, che «mi ha chiesto cosa provassi a essere il loro "idolo", sì, "idolo" proprio come un cantante o un calciatore». E la prossima tappa? «Il 19 gennaio 2019 a Matera si inaugurerà l'anno da Capitale europea della Cultura: ci sarà anche Mattarella. Mi piacerebbe fare un giro con lui nel mio Bibliomotocarro». Sarebbe il regalo più bello per festeggiare i 20 anni al servizio della cultura.
