La chiesa di “Santa Maria foris portas” si trova nel comune di Castelseprio in provincia di Varese, su un'altura distante duecento metri dalla cinta muraria di un antico “castrum”, da cui l'appellativo in latino medievale. È l'edificio più antico di Castelseprio, l'unico sopravvissuto alla distruzione e l'abbandono dell'antico borgo fortificato, grazie alla devozione legata al luogo di culto. Il motivo di interesse principale è comunque l'originalissimo e straordinariamente conservato ciclo di affreschi che decora il vano dell'abside, tra le testimonianze più importanti della pittura muraria europea nell'Alto Medioevo. Purtroppo la chiesa era chiusa e non ho potuto fotografare il ciclo di affreschi. Nonostante faccia parte del sito seriale "Longobardi in Italia: i luoghi del potere", comprendente sette luoghi densi di testimonianze architettoniche, pittoriche e scultoree dell'arte longobarda, iscritto alla Lista dei patrimoni dell'umanità dell'UNESCO nel giugno 2011, recentemente pare appurato che la chiesa sia di origine bizantina, quindi più tarda ( IX – X secolo) rispetto alla precedente datazione che la classificava, in quanto di origine longobarda, come costruita nel VI-VIII secolo.
