Il brano letterario più famoso e citato riguardo a Matera è la descrizione dello scrittore Carlo Levi (1902-1975) nel suo libro Cristo si è fermato a Eboli (Torino, Einaudi, 1945), Condannato al confino nel 1934 per attività antifascista, Levi fu inviato in Basilicata nel paese di Grassan in un apice comune, dove si vedeva, di lassù, una chiesa bianca, Santa Maria de Idris, che pareva ficcata nella terra.
