Piazza Navona è una delle più celebri piazze di Roma, e la si deve alla famiglia Pamphili. La sua forma è quella di un antico stadio: venne costruita in stile monumentale per volere di papa Innocenzo X (Giovanni Battista Pamphilj). I lavori ebbero inizio nel 1813 e terminarono nel 1877. Ai tempi dell'antica Roma, era lo Stadio di Domiziano che fu fatto costruire dall'imperatore Domiziano nell'85 e nel III secolo fu restaurato da Alessandro Severo. Era lungo 276 metri, largo 106 e poteva ospitare 30.000 spettatori. Il nome della piazza era originariamente "in Agone"poiché lo stadio era usato solo ed esclusivamente per le gare di atletica. anticamente la piazza era concava, si bloccavano le chiusure delle tre fontane e l'acqua usciva in modo da allagare la piazza. La piazza è un simbolo della Roma barocca, con elementi architettonici e scultorei di Gian Lorenzo Bernini (la Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi al centro della piazza, che rappresenta il Danubio, il Gange, il Nilo ed il Rio della Plata, i quattro angoli della Terra), Francesco Borromini e Girolamo Rainaldi (la chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone, davanti alla fontana del Bernini) e Pietro da Cortona (autore degli affreschi della galleria di Palazzo Pamphilj). Piazza Navona ha anche altre due fontane: la Fontana del Moro, scolpita da Giacomo della Porta e ritoccata dal Bernini, situata nell'area sud della piazza, e la Fontana del Nettuno che vedete nella foto. Nel 1577, dopo il restauro dell'acquedotto dell'Aqua Virgo, si diede il via ai lavori per una ramificazione sotterranea secondaria del condotto, per raggiungere Campo Marzio, una delle zone più popolate di Roma. A questo scopo furono progettate anche le famose fontane. Tra le prime furono commissionate da papa Gregorio XIII, nel 1574, a Giacomo Della Porta, le due poste alle estremità di piazza Navona (all'epoca “piazza in Agone”). Il progetto del Della Porta consisteva per entrambe in una vasca di marmo poggiata su due gradini, circoscritte da una cancellata]. Le successive migliorie, apportate dallo stesso Della Porta e poi, nel 1651, dal Bernini, riguardarono solo la fontana del Moro, quella meridionale, sia per scarsità di risorse economiche sia perché, in epoca berniniana, la fontana sul lato sud della piazza si trovava di fronte al palazzo Pamphilj, di proprietà della famiglia di papa Innocenzo X, nel quale abitava la cognata e favorita dello stesso pontefice Donna Olimpia Maidalchini. L'unico intervento di un certo rilievo, sempre ad opera del Bernini , fu la rimozione dei gradini e della cancellata e la costruzione di una vasca più ampia intorno alla fontana, che contenesse la precedente, con lo stesso disegno. Prese il nome di Fontana del Nettuno, in seguito all'aggiunta dei due gruppi scultorei, "Le Nereidi con putti e cavalli marini" di Gregorio Zappalà e "Nettuno lotta contro una piovra" di Antonio della Bitta, avvenuta a seguito di un concorso pubblico indetto dal Comune di Roma nel 1873 per creare un' assonanza stilistica con le altre due fontane presenti a piazza Navona.
