La porta S. Agostino fu costruita tra il 1561, anno di inizio dei lavori delle mura veneziane, e il 1575 su progetto di Paolo Berlendis. Costituisce da sempre l'accesso principale alla Città Alta: L'ingresso in origine era garantito da un ponte levatoio in legno, sostituito nel 1780 da un ponte in muratura sostenuto da arcate. Solo nel 1838 fu realizzata, in occasione della visita a Bergamo dell'Imperatore austriaco, la strada Ferdinandea, oggi viale Vittorio Emanuele, che sale dal centro di Bergamo Bassa per ricongiungersi con la via Pignolo proprio davanti alla porta S. Agostino.
