Il Castello Utveggio, appollaiato sulla cima di Monte Pellegrino, domina Palermo dall’alto come una sentinella. Per la sua posizione isolata e grifagna sulla città è soprannominato “il metronotte”, quasi fosse una guardia silenziosa che veglia sulla città dormiente. Costruito negli anni ’30 in stile neogotico per farne un hotel di lusso, il castello ha attraversato alterne vicende che ne hanno alimentato il fascino e il mistero. Si narra che il proprietario, Michele Utveggio, si sia suicidato a causa del fallimento del progetto alberghiero, incapace di sostenere le difficoltà finanziarie. Negli anni della Guerra Fredda ospitò anche strutture legate alla formazione dei servizi di sicurezza dello Stato. Dopo la strage di via D’Amelio del 1992, la sua posizione dominante sulla città lo rese oggetto di discussioni e ipotesi, poiché da qui si osserva buona parte di Palermo, compresa via D’Amelio, dove furono uccisi il giudice Borsellino e la sua scorta. In questa foto, la luce lunare filtrava tra le nuvole illuminando il cielo alle spalle del castello, accentuandone l’atmosfera solitaria e sinistra. Ho operato la fusione di tre esposizioni (-1, 0, +1 EV) per gestire il forte contrasto tra le luci del castello e il cielo notturno e far risaltare la lattescenza delle nubi.
