Situati su uno sperone di granito nel cuore del Triangolo Culturale, i Templi rupestri riccamente dipinti di Dambulla (I secolo a.C.) sono colmi di colorate statue e murales di Buddha. I templi della caverna sono posizionati sotto un grande strapiombo di roccia con pareti divisorie costruite per separare la grotta in singoli templi. Oggi le principali attrazioni di Dambulla sono distribuite su cinque templi rupestri separati. La stretta Grotta 1 ospita un Buddha sdraiato lungo 15 metri scavato nella roccia solida con piedi splendidamente dipinti e delicate tracce della doratura dorata che un tempo avrebbe coperto gran parte della scultura. Il tempio d' Oro di Dambulla è stato dichiarato dall'Unesco patrimonio dell'umanità nel 1991.
