ll barraggio in foto, sul fiume Po, nei pressi della città di Casale Monferrato, fu ideato e costruito nel 1874 per consentire la deviazione delle acque necessarie ad alimentare il coevo ed omonimo canale Lanza. Il canale, tuttora esistente, continua a svolgere la sua funzione e a servire per l'irrigazione delle campagne a sud della città, circa 800 ettari. La denominazione “Lanza” fu attribuita in omaggio a Giovanni Lanza, casalese, un protagonista del Risorgimento e dell'Italia unita, che ricoprì anche la carica di Presidente del Consiglio e di Ministro degli Interni dal 1869 al 1873. Nel corso del suo governo fu raggiunto il pareggio di bilancio sotto la guida di Quintino Sella, Ministro delle Finanze: cosa unica e mai più eguagliata! Erano i tempi in cui l'interesse pubblico e la cosa pubblica sopravanzavano su tutto e tutti.
