E' una falena appartenente alla famiglia Saturniidae, diffusa su gran parte del territorio mondiale, ma può essere localizzata principalmente nelle foreste tropicali dell'Asia e nelle Filippine, in Thailandia ed in Malesia. Essa presenta un'apertura alare di 30 cm ed è una delle specie più grandi del mondo; prende il suo nome dal disegno sulle sue ali che ricorda la colorazione dell'omonimo serpente. L'adulto ha una durata media di vita estremamente breve: infatti, vive solo pochissimi giorni, durante i quali non si nutre mai e riesce a sopravvivere sfruttando le riserve energetiche che accumula durante la fase larvale.
