Leonessa si adagia sule pendici del monte Tilia a 969 metri s.l.m.. La città venne fondata nel 1278 grazie all'unione di vari castelli preesistenti nella zona. Fu uno dei tanti borghi creatisi a seguito dei processi di incastellamento avvenuti nei secoli XIII-XIV. Questo avvenne specie in Abruzzo, di cui Leonessa, in tempi passati, faceva parte. Il centro storico di Leonessa offre la possibilità di ammirare alcuni palazzi d'epoca edificati tra i secoli XVI e XVIII - tra cui Palazzi Mongalli - costruiti nel XV-XVI secolo di cui uno è ora sede del Comune Collocata nell'angolo sud orientale di Piazza 7 Aprile, cuore strategico di Leonessa, si trova la cinquecentesca Fontana Margaritiana. Questa, è così denominata, poiché fu un dono che, nel 1548, Margherita d'Austria volle fare alla città. Di antiche origini è anche la Fonte della Ripa del XII secolo, caratterizzata da una forma compatta ad arco a tutto sesto. Costituiva la fonte del Castello di Ripa e, in origine, era l'unica risorsa idrica di Leonessa. Le sue acque provengono dalla limpida e fresca sorgente della Rocca.
