Il 24 aprile ho ricominciato le esplorazioni notturne, non so perché ma dentro di me sentivo che quello era il giorno giusto. Appena è arrivato il buio ho iniziato l'esplorazione andando avanti e indietro per tutto il terreno, ho camminato per più di due ore e ho osservato molti bruchi, lumache, gechi e ragni. Ero poco distante da casa quando all'improvviso ho sentito un rumore tra l'erba e ho incontrato a pochi passi dalla porta questo riccio appallottolato, era ben mimetizzato nel terreno e per fotografarlo l'ho delicatamente spostato nell'orto. Dopo pochi minuti però mi sono subito accorto che era in gravi condizioni di salute: aveva due ferite ai lati della testa e quando si è aperto ho visto anche che gli mancava una zampa posteriore. È stato attaccato da qualche animale, forse un cane, non credo sia stata la volpe perché lei sa bene come fare. Così è finita la prima notte di esplorazione, ho preso il riccio e sono corso a casa. Dopo un'attenta osservazione le sue condizioni sono apparse ancora più gravi: era sottopeso e perdeva un po' di sangue da altre piccole ferite sul dorso che prima non avevo visto. Purtroppo di notte con pochissima luce non è facile vedere sotto gli aculei. È un maschio, la mia esperienza mi ha insegnato che dalle mie parti è raro trovare un riccio maschio da solo in primavera, quando inizia il periodo degli accoppiamenti. Così nelle notti successive sono andato alla ricerca della tana perlustrando la zona in cerca di tracce. Dopo tre giorni, la sera del 27 aprile, ho seguito alcune impronte e buchi nel terreno e finalmente l'ho trovata; era a pochi passi da casa nascosta molto bene tra gli alberi e l'erba alta. Lì vicino c'era una femmina, anche lei è stata attaccata e aveva una piccola ferita sul dorso; ho controllato attentamente la tana e il terreno circostante in cerca dei piccoli ma non ho trovato niente, quindi sono corso a casa a medicarla. Ora è passata una settimana e con mio grande sollievo i ricci stanno bene, tutte le ferite stanno guarendo, sono molto attivi e mangiano molto; sono ghiotti di pollo, mele e anche di croccantini per gatti. La femmina aveva una ferita molto superficiale ed è bastato poco per guarirla, al maschio sono servite medicazioni costanti più volte al giorno per disinfettare le ferite ma è forte e guarisce in fretta. Nei primi giorni a causa della zampa mancante camminava zoppicando ma ora che la ferita si è completamente rimarginata riesce anche a correre. Rimangono solo degli aculei insanguinati in alcuni punti del dorso, non sono ferite ma è il sangue dell'animale che ha tentato di morderlo. A causa del morso questi aculei stanno cadendo un po' alla volta lasciando spazio ad altri. Quasi ogni anno incontro i ricci nel mio terreno, sono animali delicati e devono sopravvivere a tanti pericoli. Anni fa incontrai sempre davanti la porta di casa anche una madre con i piccoli, tutti denutriti e sottopeso. Per fortuna non erano gravi e diventarono tutti grandi e forti...Le notti successive ho portato i ricci con me per fotografarli, mi sono posizionato sotto agli alberi da frutto; li ho sistemati delicatamente tra l'erba e ho aspettato che si aprissero. Sono rimasto ad osservarli per ore e sono riuscito a fotografarli in alcune simpatiche pose, la femmina è a sinistra e il maschio a destra, riconoscibile dagli aculei insanguinati sopra la testa. In quel momento mi stavano guardando incuriositi annusando il terreno, dopo averli curati hanno capito che possono fidarsi di me. In questi giorni ha piovuto e non ho voluto portarli fuori per fotografarli, lo farò appena il tempo migliora, intanto ho creato una galleria dedicata a loro in cui piano piano pubblicherò nuove foto.
