La Golden Rock è un masso alto 20 metri, sospeso nel vuoto e perfettamente bilanciato su uno sperone roccioso del Monte Kyaiktiyo, in Myanmar. Sulla roccia, oltre 2.000 anni fa, è stata costruita una pagoda di 7 metri dove è conservato un capello del Buddha: una preziosa reliquia che, secondo la leggenda, mantiene in equilibrio il macigno. Questa gigantesca roccia, completamente rivestita di oro purissimo, è una delle principali mete di pellegrinaggio buddhista del paese; ogni anno migliaia di turisti e devoti si recano in questo luogo sacro per attaccare una lamina d'oro sulla pietra, rendendola sempre più lucente e preziosa. La credenza popolare vuole che, mostrando devozione al Buddha, si riceva in cambio fortuna e prosperità. Solo agli uomini è consentito il privilegio di pregare e toccare la pietra, alle donne non è permesso nemmeno avvicinarsi. Il tempio si trova a circa 1.100 metri sul livello del mare e si raggiunge attraverso una salita piuttosto faticosa. La massima concentrazione dei pellegrinaggi va da novembre a marzo, il periodo in cui si festeggia il Full Moon of Tabaungè: una ricorrenza celebrata ogni anno attorno alla Golden Rock, dove migliaia di fedeli accendono 90 mila candeline e bruciano incenso. Un luogo mistico, dove poesia e suggestione si mescolano alle preghiere dei pellegrini buddhisti di tutto il mondo, e in cui recarsi almeno una volta nella vita.
