Piazza del Duomo a Taormina accoglie la fontana detta “quattro fontane. Eretta Nel 1635, per desiderio degli amministratori del tempo, realizzata in stile barocco. Quattro piccole colonne si trovano ai quatto angoli del corpo centrale e sono sormontate da quattro cavallucci marini dalla cui bocca usciva l'acqua che finiva nelle vaschette sottostanti. Oggi solo un cavalluccio è ancora funzionante. In realtà la fontana vera e propria è costituita dal corpo centrale, formata da due vasche. Il Duomo attuale è una somma delle influenze stilistiche e dei rimaneggiamenti subiti nelle varie epoche. Tra il 1945 e il 1948 l'architetto napoletano Armando Dillon diresse il restauro della chiesa rimettendo in luce le primitive strutture delle arcate dell'abside della chiesa occultate da stucchi barocchi, ripristinando le coperture a terrazzo sulle navate laterali. La struttura è semplice, a croce latina, con tre navate e tre absidi. La navata centrale è sostenuta da sei colonne di marmo rosa di Taormina con dei capitelli con motivo a foglia e squama di pesce. Si pensa che queste possano provenire dal teatro greco-romano taorminese. Il soffitto è caratterizzato da grandi travi in legno con mensole intagliate con motivi arabi resi in gusto gotico. Per la severità architettonica della costruzione medievale e gli elementi di fortificazione esterni, la chiesa viene soprannominata "la cattedrale fortezza". La facciata è infatti caratterizzata dalla merlatura a corona mentre sul retro si erge la torre a bastione sulla quale sono state collocate le campane nel 1750. Di notevole pregio il portale principale restaurato nel 1936 ed il grande rosone centrale d'ispirazione rinascimentale. Questa foto è adeguata alla stagione attuale anche se scattata durante una eccezionale nevicata, per questo Borgo, il 7 gennaio 2017.
