Secondo una leggenda diffusasi presso la popolazione indigena dei Tupi, in Amazzonia, la nascita delle ninfee è collegata a un tragico evento. Si racconta infatti che una fanciulla era tanto affascinata dalla luna da desiderare di essere una stella, per poterla accarezzare. La fanciulla pregava giorno e notte gli spiriti di potersi trasformare in una stella, ma il suo desiderio non si realizzava. Così, una sera la giovane donna si impossessò di una canoa e la utilizzò per raggiungere il punto della palude in cui la luna si rifletteva per poterla toccar; malauguratamente la fanciulla si sporse troppo dalla canoa, cadde in acqua e annegò. Fu solo in quel momento che gli dei la trasformarono in un fiore a forma di stella che potesse galleggiare nelle paludi nelle notti in cui la luna risplendeva nel cielo.
