Il duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, note anche come Piazza dei Miracoli, è la cattedrale medievale di Pisa. Capolavoro del romanico pisano, rappresenta la testimonianza tangibile del prestigio e della ricchezza raggiunti dalla repubblica marinara di Pisa nel momento del suo apogeo. Venne solennemente inaugurata nel 1064 da papa Gelasio II, dopo la vittoria dei Pisani a Palermo. Nelle intenzione dei Pisani, doveva gareggiare in bellezza e maestosità a San Pietro, alla Moschea di Cordoba, alla Chiesa di Santa Sofia a Costantinopoli. Il cantiere fu diretto da due architetti: prima Buscheto poi Rainaldo. La facciata presenta nel lato inferiore sei arcate cieche a tutto sesto su colonne con capitelli, tarsie policrome con losanghe. Il paramento esterno, con marmi di provenienze diverse, con elementi architettonici e iscrizioni di epoca romana, si sviluppa su quattro ordini di loggette sostenute da colonne. Le porte in bronzo sono opera di artisti toscani del XVII secolo, mentre la Porta di San Ranieri, di fronte alla Torre, è opera di Bonanno Pisano (1180) ed è l'unica scampata all'incendio del 1595.
