Stranamente la città di Messina non ha una grossa tradizione di pesca. Quella più sentita è quella svolta intorno ai borghi di Torre Faro e Ganzirri. Qui la pesca "commerciale" è quasi unicamente quella al pesce spada che però viene effettuata solo nei mesi estivi, quando il pesce transita attraverso lo stretto di Messina. Il resto delle attività di pesca sono per uso personale o a rifornire qualche ristorante. Poco del pescato locale finisce sui banconi delle pescherie.
Sino a qualche tempo fa veniva più spesso venduto sulla spiaggia, al rientro delle barche. Prevalentemente pesce azzurro: sarde, acciughe, costardelle e la scintillante spatola. Oggi immagino non possa essere più effettuata una vendita così diretta per motivi fiscali.
