Edificato su un sepolcreto romano all'inizio dell'XI secolo il Battistero di S. Giovanni Battista è un pregevolissimo esempio di architettura romanica. Costruito in ciottoli e laterizi ha pianta quadrilatera con quattro absidi semicircolari separate da robusti contrafforti che sorreggono il tiburio ottagonale sormontato da un lanternino di epoca più tarda. Sul portale principale si nota un bassorilievo in marmo di epoca romana raffigurante due putti, proveniente con ogni probabilità dai materiali di scavo emersi durante la costruzione del Battistero e riutilizzato come elemento decorativo. L'interno, semplice ed austero, conserva le tracce di due campagne decorative ad affresco fra le quali quella dovuta al Maestro di Oropa (1318-1319).
