Uno dei rari esempi in terra veneta, in provincia di Rovigo, tra Adige e Po, dell'architettura ferrarese, emiliana, con influssi laziali, risalente al dominio estense.
Nel 1409 Nicolò III investì del castello di Sariano Uguccione I dei Contrari, governatore dello stato e luogotenente generale delle milizie estensi. A lui vengono ceduti vasti terreni vallivi e paludosi, mentre gli abitanti mantengono il "Vagativo", che prevede di poter cacciare, pescare, raccogliere erbe e canne palustri.
Nel 1482 l'area fu coinvolta nella "Guerra del Sale" tra estensi e veneziani, ma
a guerra finita i funzionari estensi continuarono a svolgere le loro mansioni. Tutte le proprietà dei Contrari passarono per via ereditaria alla famiglia bolognese dei Pepoli.
Poi, molto tempo dopo, questa proprietà passò ai conti Spalletti.
Quanta storia in un edificio di linee così semplici e armoniose, che sorge proprio nell'area del distrutto castello.
Forse la torre è ancora parte superstite proprio di quel castello.
