Il Teatro di Marcello – è un antico teatro all'aria aperta adibito, a suo tempo, agli spettacoli serali. Fu costruito per volere di Cesare e fu completato nel 13 aC dall'imperatore Augusto, che lo dedicò al defunto nipote Marco Claudio Marcello. Era il più grande teatro romano dell'epoca e fu utilizzato dai romani per oltre 400 anni. L'edificio fu eretto in Campo Marzio, nel luogo che la tradizione aveva consacrato alle rappresentazioni sceniche, dove già si trovava il “Theatrum et proscenium ad Apollinis”, connesso con il tempio di Apollo. Quest'edificio fisserà lo schema del teatro classico romano, in cui la cavea poggia su strutture in muratura e non su un declivio naturale, come nel teatro greco. Nonostanza l'evidente somiglianza al Colosseo, in realtà fu costruito un secolo prima durante gli ultimi anni della Repubblica Romana. il teatro potrebbe essere il più antico sopravvissuto al mondo nel suo genere. Servì inoltre da modello per la costruzione del Colosseo, e la sobrietà nella struttura della facciata ne fece un modello di riferimento per ogni teatro e anfiteatro romano di futura costruzione.
