Al momento della sua fondazione, ad opera della potentissima famiglia dei Doria, nell'anno 1102, fu battezzato "Castelgenovese". Nel 1448, essendo passato sotto il controllo della Corona d'Aragona, venne chiamato Castellaragonese. Furono i Savoia, nel Settecento, ad attribuirgli l'attuale denominazione. Il promontorio trachitico a picco sul mare, dove svettano l'antico Castello, le possenti mura ed il campanile aragonese della bellissima Cattedrale di Sant'Antonio Abate, conferisce a questo luogo una magia senza eguali
