La costruzione della chiesa si fa risalire al 1379, ma sicuramente non si trattava della chiesa attuale situata nella piazza omonima, bensì di una semplice chiesa ad un'arcata, realizzata sembra su disegno di Bartolino da Novara. Un primo rifacimento della chiesa è del 1447, la costruzione di nuove cappelle è del 1457, mentre il campanile venne edificato nel 1475. Nel 1801, in epoca napoleonica, la chiesa fu adibita ad alloggio militare. Nel 1825, ripristinata la funzione religiosa, iniziarono importanti lavori di restauro che portarono, in un cinquantennio, a farle assumere l'aspetto attuale. La chiesa è a tre navate, la principale ampia e spaziosa è divisa dalle laterali da alti pilastri, fasce costituite da più colonne in blocco terminanti con un arco acuto. La facciata, ricca di decorazioni in cotto, fu restaurata dall'architetto Moretti nel 1903 con il rifacimento del rosone e la tamponatura delle porte laterali. Nel 1931 fu restaurata la facciata laterale. All'interno le volte e le pareti mostrano decorazioni che sono opera del pittore Felice Cavallasca, mentre gli affreschi sono del vigevanese Garberini. Tra questi: Il Crocefisso nel coro, La gloria di S. Francesco sull'arca dell'altar maggiore e, sulla volta del presbiterio, le figure di Santi. Sulla volta della navata principale sono raffigurati i 12 Apostoli. La chiesa conserva inoltre buone tavole di autori del '500 e '600 della scuola di Bernardino Ferrari e dell'autore romano Gagliardi e di altri autori minori.(Fonte: Vigevano online).
