La bandiera e il simbolo dei Quattro Mori - La prima volta in cui il simbolo dei Quattro Mori comparve su un documento ufficiale, stando a quanto è conservato in archivi e musei, risale al 1281: si tratta di sigilli in piombo della cancelleria aragonese, apposti su testi nel periodo in cui era re Pietro III detto “il Grande”. Si ha ragione di credere che questo simbolo sia stato concesso alla nostra Isola soltanto nel 1379, dopo l'annessione del Regno di Aragona con Castiglia e della Sardegna alla Confederazione della Corona d'Aragona (Stammario di Gerle). Documenti risalenti al 1590 lo fanno apparire come stemma del Regno di Sardegna: un ovale con una croce rossa in campo bianco e le teste di quattro mori bendati in fronte. Col passare dei secoli, ha subìto qualche variazione ma, nella sostanza, è rimasto lo stesso. Sulle origini si è molto discusso e ancora si discute. Alcuni studiosi ipotizzano che sia nato nel 1096, quando il re Pietro I d'Aragona vinse la battaglia di Alcoraz contro i Saraceni (popoli musulmani). Secondo una leggenda, durante la sanguinosa battaglia sarebbe apparso un cavaliere vestito di bianco e una croce rossa sul petto, che avrebbe messo in fuga i Saraceni terrorizzati: si sarebbe capito soltanto dopo che si trattava di San Giorgio, il quale avrebbe lasciato sul campo di battaglia le teste mozzate dei quattro re Saraceni sconfitti. Nel Settecento, il simbolo mostrò i Quattro Mori con le bende calate sugli occhi, e così rimase sino a quando, con la legge regionale n° 10 del 15 Aprile 1999, si è stabilito che i Quattro Mori debbano avere la benda sulla fronte e siano voltanti a destra, e non più a sinistra.
