La Giornata dell'Unità Nazionale e delle Forze Armate fu Istituita nel 1919 per commemorare la vittoria italiana nella prima guerra mondiale, è festeggiata ogni 4 novembre, data dell'entrata in vigore dell'armistizio di Villa Giusti (4 novembre 1918) e della resa dell'Impero austro-ungarico. In occasione del 4 novembre, e dei giorni immediatamente precedenti, le massime cariche dello Stato rendono omaggio al Milite Ignoto, la cui salma riposa presso l'Altare della Patria a Roma, si recano in visita al Sacrario di Redipuglia, dove sono custodite le salme dei 100.000 caduti italiani della prima guerra mondiale, nonché a Vittorio Veneto, dove si svolse l'ultima e risolutiva battaglia del conflitto armato fra il Regio Esercito italiano e l'esercito imperiale austro-ungarico. È prassi che il Presidente della Repubblica Italiana e il Ministro della Difesa inviino alle forze armate italiane, il giorno della celebrazione, un messaggio di auguri e di riconoscenza a nome del Paese. Il 4 novembre viene celebrato anche in altre sedi istituzionali come Regioni, Province e Comuni. Nel giorno della festa, presso il Palazzo del Quirinale, viene effettuato in forma solenne il Cambio della Guardia con il Reggimento Corazzieri e la Fanfara del IV Reggimento Carabinieri a cavallo in alta uniforme. Questo rito solenne viene svolto solamente in altre due occasioni, durante le celebrazioni della Festa del Tricolore (7 gennaio) e della Festa della Repubblica Italiana (2 giugno)[8]. In occasione della festa delle forze armate italiane è pratica diffusa l'apertura al pubblico delle casermee la visita a unità navali militari. All'interno delle caserme vengono organizzate esposizioni di armamenti e mostre riguardanti la prima guerra mondiale. Nelle piazze delle principali città italiane si tengono concerti delle bande militari, così come vengono organizzate celebrazioni e sfilate delle forze armate di fronte ai Monumenti ai Caduti che sono presenti nei Comuni italiani.
