Vicinissima a Polignano a Mare, sulla costa nord, troviamo l'imponente Abbazia dei Benedettini, costruita proprio a ridosso del porticciolo ed affacciata direttamente sul mare. La leggenda narra di una nobildonna di Salerno che, mentre stava annegando nel fiume Sele, venne miracolosamente salvata da San Vito che le avrebbe chiesto di far traslare il suo corpo nel castrum polymnianense in Puglia. Le reliquie sante resero prospero il luogo sacro e fu cosi fondata l'abbazia, con tutta probabilità nel X secolo, ad opera di una comunità di monaci basiliani a cui seguirono, nell'XI secolo, i monaci benedettini. La storia dell'edificio ebbe però una vita travagliata, in quanto nei secoli successivi si succedettero vari domini e vi si insidiarono anche i monaci francescani che resero il luogo meta di pellegrinaggi. Bisogna arrivare nel XIX secolo per trovare un po' di pace: dopo la soppressione degli ordini monastici, infatti, il monastero fu inglobato nel palazzo marchesale dei Tavassi-La Greca. Il complesso di San Vito rappresenta tutt'oggi un esempio di architettura monastica di rilevante importanza storica. L'elegante abbazia che si ammira attualmente è il risultato di aggiunte architettoniche nei secoli, ma ad affascinare sono soprattutto le eleganti forme barocche, come la scenografica scalinata esterna che dalla corte conduce al loggiato con affaccio sul mare. L'edificio sacro è caratterizzato dalla chiesa romanica costruita sulle rovine dell'antica torre romana e alterata a sua volta dalla sovrapposizione di una costruzione adibita a sede del convento. L'aspetto rilevante della chiesa a tre navate è costituito dall'impianto con tre cupole in asse e con volte a botte nelle navate laterali. Tutt'oggi sono ben visibili i segni di un sistema difensivo contro le incursioni dal mare: le mura, all'interno la torre masseria del XVI secolo e sul mare la torre costiera.
