Un complesso monumentale longobardo, oggi parte di un parco archeologico dichiarato Patrimonio Mondiale dell'UNESCO, immerso nella natura e raccolto attorno a un'imponente torre con interni affrescati. Quella del complesso di Torba è una vicenda antichissima che ha origine nel V secolo d.C., quando i Romani costruirono le mura di un avamposto militare contro la minaccia dei barbari, nei pressi del borgo di Castelseprio. Ancora oggi il torrione di guardia rimane a testimonianza della funzione originaria del castrum, portata avanti anche da Goti, Bizantini e Longobardi e poi mutata nel tempo. Da roccaforte difensiva, Torba divenne centro religioso con l'insediamento di un gruppo di monache benedettine che nell'VIII secolo fece costruire il monastero e, più tardi, la piccola chiesa. Per circa sette secoli l'appartata comunità femminile abitò questo luogo, consegnandoci come eredità del suo durevole passaggio gli affreschi nella torre, ieratici, dall'aura quasi misteriosa. Nel Quattrocento le Benedettine si trasferirono e per Torba cominciò un lento declino che portò il complesso a tramutarsi in azienda agricola e, a inizio Ottocento, a perdere la propria funzione religiosa per scivolare gradualmente in uno stato di degrado interrotto solo nel 1976 grazie al FAI. Oggi questo sito millenario dal passato importante (non a caso inserito nel 2011 nelle liste del Patrimonio dell'Umanità UNESCO) rivive anche alla luce dei continui ritrovamenti di età longobarda, che costituiscono solo una delle sorprese che il Monastero, e il suo territorio ricco di tesori di arte e natura, offrono a chi va alla ricerca di luoghi fuori dai circuiti più noti e frequentati.
