La Lychnis viscaria L. , comunemente chiamata Crotonella viscaria o Silene viscaria, appartiene alla famiglia delle Caryophyllaceae ed è specie rara che si può ritrovare, con un po' di fortuna, lungo tutto l'arco alpino ed in Basilicata tra i 1.000 ed i 1.600 m. slm. Era presente anche in Abruzzo ed in Calabria, ma non è stata più ritrovata. Il nome del genere deriva dal gr. 'lýchnos', lampada: gli steli di queste piante erano impiegati per formare degli stoppini alle lucerne. L'epiteto specifico dal lat. 'viscarius, -a, -um', da 'viscum', vischio, in riferimento ai fusti appiccicosi. Curiosità: La viscosità dei fusti ha probabilmente la funzione di impedire alle formiche l'accesso ai fiori per non 'rubarne' il nettare destinato agli insetti pronubi. Scatto effettuato nel mese di Maggio 2017 nel Giardino Botanico Alpinia ? Alpino di Stresa (VB) ad una quota di circa 800 m. slm.
