Il Parco nazionale del Mercantour è uno dei nove parchi nazionali della Francia, situato nei dipartimenti delle Alpi Marittime e delle Alpi dell'Alta Provenza. È conosciuto anche perché ospita dal 1992 alcune decine di lupi provenienti dall'Italia. Per proteggere la fauna, i territori centrali del massiccio del Mercantour sono stati nel 1859 classificati Riserva reale di caccia dal re sabaudo Vittorio Emanuele II; in seguito nel 1946 sono stati classificati riserva di caccia per decreto prefettizio e nel 1953 per decreto ministeriale. Il parco nazionale è stato creato nel 1979. Dal 1987 è stato gemellato con il confinante parco regionale italiano chiamato Parco naturale delle Alpi Marittime (sul massiccio dell'Argentera). Con quest'ultimo è allo studio il progetto di un parco europeo. Nel 1993 il parco è stato insignito del Diploma europeo delle aree protette. Il territorio del parco nazionale del Mercantour si estende su due dipartimenti, 28 comuni, 68.500 ettari nella zona centrale e 136.500 ettari nella zona periferica. Il punto più alto è il Monte Gelàs a 3.143 m. La Valle delle Meraviglie (in francese Vallée des Merveilles) fa parte del massiccio del Mercantour; vi sono state scoperte più di trentacinquemila incisioni rupestri preistoriche, tra le quali numerose figure di armi (pugnali e alabarde) risalenti soprattutto all'età del Rame (III millennio a.C.) e in misura minore all'antica età del Bronzo (2200-1800 a.C.). Sono presenti anche figure più antiche, in particolare reticolati e composizioni topografiche (nell'area di Fontanalba), databili al Neolitico (V e IV millennio a.C.). La Valle delle Meraviglie si trova nel comune di Tenda. Fino al 1861 faceva parte della Contea di Nizza sabauda, poi dal 1861 al 1947ha fatto parte dell'Italia ed era compresa nella provincia di Cuneo, col Trattato di Parigi del 1947 passò alla Francia. ---- La foto è composta dall'unione di due scatti orizzontali.
