La Gentiana punctata L., comunemente chiamata Genziana punteggiata, appartiene alla famiglia delle Gentianaceae. Il nome del genere pare derivi da quello di Gentius, re dell'Illiria del secondo secolo a.C., che, a detta di Plinio, avrebbe per primo evidenziato le proprietà medicamentose di questa pianta. Il nome specifico deriva dalla punteggiatura della corolla. Antica pianta officinale, dalle proprietà simili a quelle della Gentiana lutea L. Contiene glicosidi amari che aumentano la secrezione gastrica per riflesso della stimolazione delle papille gustative. Le radici hanno proprietà febbrifughe, stimolanti della funzione digestiva, vermifughe e aperitive. Entra in molte preparazioni come amaro tonico, si usa per stimolare l'appetito. La Genziana in montagna, godeva e gode ancora, la fama di panacea.
