Stazione di Torino Porta Nuova, aspetto degli amici, sono in anticipo, così mi faccio un giretto sotto i portici della stazione, e mi si avvicina questo signore egiziano, per chiedermi di comprargli un amuleto portafortuna. Sono quei braccialetti colorati che, ormai vendono ovunque, glielo compro e lui, mi guarda sbalordito e mi dice: "Come mai tu non chiedi sconto? In Egitto non si compra nulla senza contrattare". Rispondo: " Conosco le vostre usanze perché conosco molto bene il tuo Paese, avendolo girato più volte in lungo e in largo, ma qui siamo in Italia, caro amico". Ancora due chiacchiere, poi ci salutiamo e mi dice che va a telefonare a casa, un piccolo paese vicino a Luxor, dove ha moglie e sette figli. Bevo un caffé, torno verso la stazione e te lo vedo all'angolo di una colonna: stava ancora parlando al telefono dopo più di dieci minuti.
