Il traliccio siciliano, detto "pilone di Torre Faro" (in dialetto reggino e messinese u piluni), fu progettato dalla SAE a partire dal 1951 e costruito tra il 1954 e il 1955 su commessa della Società generale elettrica della Sicilia (SGES); fu inaugurato nel maggio 1956, dall'allora presidente della Regione Siciliana Giuseppe Alessi, ed è alto 225 metri, più otto della base di calcestruzzo armato che lo sostiene, per totali 233 metri. Il traliccio calabrese, situato sulla sommità della collina di Santa Trada, è identico, ma con i 169 metri sottostanti di promontorio, svetta a ben 394 metri sullo specchio d'acqua dello Stretto. I piloni sono stati realizzati sul modello dei tralicci sul fiume Elba, in Germania, ma i costruttori dovettero adattare il progetto alle caratteristiche geomorfologiche dello Stretto. I due piloni vennero progettati per resistere ad un terremoto del 10? grado della scala Mercalli e a raffiche di vento sino a 150 km/h. Fonte :wikipedia
