Gerico è una città della Cisgiordania, nel deserto di Giuda, a 240 metri sotto il livello del mare, considerata la città più antica del mondo. Geograficamente ha il fiume Giordano davanti e alle sue spalle il monte del Jebel Qarantal (il Monte delle Tentazioni). Si legge nei Vangeli che, sul Monte del Jebel Qarantal, e precisamente, nel deserto ,Gesù si ritirò per quaranta giorni e quaranta notti a digiunare e a pregare, dopo aver ricevuto il battesimo da suo cugino Giovanni Battista. Qui, Gesù viene tentato tre volte dal diavolo. Le tentazioni di Satana avevano lo scopo di mettere al primo posto i piaceri della carne, a scapito della volontà di Dio. Sul luogo dove, secondo la tradizione, Gesù venne tentato dal diavolo esiste dal 1895, su precedenti costruzioni bizantine e crociate, il monastero greco-ortodosso della Tentazione. Il monastero è incollato su uno strapiombo di roccia, per arrivarci occorre camminare per una trentina di minuti su un sentiero abbastanza ripido. Chi non vuole faticare, come la sottoscritta, sceglie la funivia che partendo dalle vicinanze degli scavi di Tell es-Sultan arriva in prossimità del monastero. Chi sceglie di andare a piedi, al ritorno, può rinfrescarsi con l'acqua di un piccolo canale, all'ombra di vecchi sicomori, l'ingresso di questo giardino si trova a sinistra del chiosco di bevande posto all'inizio del sentiero che conduce al monastero della Tentazione, scavato nella roccia del monte Quruntul. Il monastero è abitato da monaci greco-ortodossi. E' una bellissima esperienza, solo un po' faticosa, ma ne vale assolutamente la pena. Critiche, commenti e consigli sempre super graditi. Grazie.
