Asswan sorge sul punto più affascinante del Nilo, dove le acque del fiume incontrano il deserto formando piccole idilliache isole Oltre il suo ruolo militare era anche un florido centro di mercato, collocato sul crocevia di antiche rotte commerciali. Vi giungevano qui le carovane che portavano dal sud merci pregiati come l'oro, profumi, pelli di animali e zanne d'avorio.. A nord dalla Corniche, verso l'interno, c'è il famoso mercato di Asswan, che, pur non offrendo più le antiche merci di un tempo è tuttora uno spettacolo di fragranze e colori esotici, ricco di spezie, tessuti, tappeti e gioielli nubiani. Il villaggio si stava trasformando in un'attrazione turistica ancora dall'inizio dello scorso secolo. Il lungofiume, ( Corniche) di Asswan, è forse il più bello di tutto l'Egitto, perché si affaccia su un tratto molto suggestivo, pieno di isolotti ricoperti da palmeti. Nell'altra direzione del viale, su una collinetta, si trovano i giardini pubblici, Ferial Garden, ideali per ripararsi dal sole della giornata. Un altro ricordo dagli albori del turismo internazionale è l' Old Cataract Hotel, alloggio scelto da numerosi personaggi famosi tra cui Agatha Christie, che nel 1973 ha scritto qui parte del suo romanzo Assassinio sul Nilo, e nello stesso hotel fu poi girato il film nel 1978.
