In Olanda la bicicletta è un mezzo di trasporto molto diffuso nonostante le condizioni meteo non sempre favorevoli. Si calcola che ad Amsterdam ci siano più biciclette che abitanti, ogni strada è affiancata da una pista ciclabile separata dal marciapiede e in tutto il centro abitato di Marken le auto non sono ammesse.
