Anni fa, al Carnevale di Viareggio. Come diceva il buon Giovanbattista Vico, ci sono "i corsi e i ricorsi storici", ieri Prodi e il Cavaliere, oggi ho l'impressione che la singolar tenzone sia fra l'enfant prodige fiorentino, Renzi e il totalitario Salvini. Ma lasciamo le beghe della politica, e leggiamoci, se volete, qualche cenno storico su Viareggio e il suo Carnevale, uno dei più famosi al mondo. La prima sfilata di carrozze addobbate a festa nella storica Via Regia, nel cuore della città vecchia, risale al 1873. Fu l'inizio della grande tradizione e spettacolo che è attualmente il Carnevale di Viareggio. Furono i giovani della Viareggio “bene”, quelli che frequentavano il caffè del Casinò, ad avere l'idea di una sfilata per le strade per festeggiare il Carnevale. Verso la fine del 1800, comparvero i primi carri allegorici: veri e propri monumenti , costruiti in legno, scagliola e juta, modellati da scultori, fabbri e falegnami, che in Darsena lavoravano nei cantieri navali. Il provvidenziale trasferimento delle sfilate dalla via Regia alla Passeggiata a Mare, agli inizi del '900 diede al Carnevale un palcoscenico grandissimo che, stimolò la fantasia e la creatività dei “maestri carristi”. Anno, dopo anno, la manifestazione diventa “tradizione” e nemmeno la prima guerra mondiale riesce a distruggerla: si ferma, ma riprende subito dopo. Al 1921 risale l'inno ufficiale del Carnevale di Viareggio: “Coppa di Champagne” e l'inizio di una sorta di promozione pubblicitaria della manifestazione, attraverso la rivista “Viareggio in Maschera”. Sempre nel 1921, per la prima volta le maschere si animano a suon di musica: una banda trova posto a bordo del carro “Tonin di Burio”, che rappresentava la festa nuziale nell'aia di una casa colonica. Nel 1923 il “ movimento “ anima i carri allegorici. Il primo a sbattere le palpebre fu il malinconico Pierrot del Giampieri. Ma la vera rivoluzione risale al 1925, quando per iniziativa di Antonio D'Arliano e di alcuni costruttori, viene inventata, per realizzare i carri, la tecnica della carta a calco, meglio conosciuta come cartapesta. Questo materiale, estremamente leggero, quanto povero, ha consentito costruzioni colossali e sempre più ardite nella scenografia e nella movimentazione. Per reclamizzare i Corsi Mascherati, dal 1926, viene dato alle stampe un manifesto, nuovo ogni anno. Nel 1930, Uberto Bonetti, pittore e grafico futurista, inventa Burlamacco, maschera simbolo di Viareggio, e Ondina, bagnante simbolo della stagione estiva, e disegnandoli sullo stesso manifesto, riassume i due momenti clou di Viareggio: l'estate con i suoi ombrelloni bianchi e rossi (tipici degli anni '30) e il Carnevale. Nel 1954, il Carnevale di Viareggio, viene scelto come evento mediatico e conquista la prima diretta della nascente televisione italiana, nel 1958, la telecronaca uscirà dai patrii confini con l'Eurovisione. Nel 1984 la Lotteria nazionale di Viareggio viene abbinata al concorso dei carri di prima categoria e nel biennio 1988-1989 il sabato sera televisivo degli italiani, su RaiUno, è dedicato ai coriandoli di Viareggio. Nel 2001 è stata inaugurata la nuova Cittadella del Carnevale, straordinario complesso architettonico, interamente dedicato alla creazione e alla conservazione del Carnevale di Viareggio. Due i Musei: uno dedicato alla storia dei carri del Carnevale e l'altro al Carnevalotto, preziosa collezione di opere d'arte di grandi firme contemporanee ispirate al Carnevale di Viareggio.
