Tutte le volte che passo in piazza del Duomo, il mio sguardo va al monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II, e qualcuno si chiederà: “Come mai?”. Ho girato il mondo, per 42 anni per lavoro, e ora, finalmente per diletto, ma questo monumento fa parte dei sogni di una bambina di pochissimi anni. Mio padre, in quel di Monopoli, per farmi star ferma almeno per un po' (avevo l'argento vivo addosso), mi prendeva sulle ginocchia, e sul tavolo tirava fuori da una scatola, vecchie foto e cartoline, e me le illustrava, quasi si trattasse di una favola. Fra tutti quei vecchi ricordi, spiccava una cartolina ingiallita e lisa dal tempo che, raffigurava questo monumento: l'aveva spedita il nonno alla nonna, durante la prima guerra mondiale. La cartolina è ancora in un cassetto a casa dei miei, ma quella bimba, diventata adulta, e arrivata a Milano per l'università, ed è subito corsa in piazza del Duomo, per vedere finalmente il monumento della sua infanzia. E in questa foto, ho cercato di riprodurre un po' quella vecchia cartolina ingiallita dal tempo che, a una bimba di quattro anni, non facevano toccare per paura che la sciupasse. Scusandomi, per avervi magari annoiato con queste vecchie storie, ecco qualche cenno storico: Il monumento venne commissionato allo scultore Ercole Rosa da Umberto I nel 1878 subito dopo la morte del padre, ma venne messo in piazza Duomo, solo nel 1896 in quanto lo scultore morì prima di aver terminato il monumento che venne finito da altri e poi inaugurato ufficialmente. Lo stesso monumento avrebbe dovuto essere realizzato dal Rosa, a Vercelli, dove lo scultore aveva vinto un concorso, ma il nuovo re, decretò che si dovesse invece realizzare a Milano, sede, senz'altro più prestigiosa. Quando la fonderia Barigozzi, terminò le fusioni delle parti in bronzo, si decise di porre la statua al centro di piazza Duomo, anzicché nei pressi di Palazzo Reale. Nel frattempo, morto Ercole Rosa, i lavori vennero affidati ai fratelli Barzaghi, fino al 1892, diretti da Stefano Ferrari. La statua rappresenta il re mentre guida i soldati nella battaglia di San Martino, ed è posta su una base in granito rosso, circondato da una gradinata in marmo bianco dalla quale si innalza un altro piedistallo in marmo di Carrara con un rilievo che raffigura l'ingresso delle truppe piemontesi a Milano dopo la battaglia di Magenta, durante la seconda guerra d'Indipendenza. Sul piedistallo si trova la data «giugno 1859» a rimarcare l'ingresso del re a Milano (8 giugno 1859), mentre sul lato opposto si trova la scritta «14 giugno 1896» in riferimento alla data d'inaugurazione del monumento. La scultura soprastante, in bronzo, rappresenta il re nell'atto di frenare la foga del suo cavallo, alla base si trovano due leoni sdraiati sulle gradinate laterali che posano una zampa ciascuno su una targa con inciso il nome «Roma» e «Milano», in riferimento alle grandi conquiste del Risorgimento.
