Animale romantico per eccellenza, il cigno forma col compagno una coppia inseparabile e dopo la morte del coniuge diventa malinconico e rifiuta di scegliere un nuovo partner. I cigni, spesso ritratti dai fotografi uno di fronte all'altro con i becchi che si sfiorano, a disegnare un cuore con i loro lunghi colli, sono davvero un esempio di coppia fedele, monogama e di genitori amorevoli nei confronti dei loro pulcini. comincia con il corteggiamento, molto spettacolare da vedere, con il maschio che si mette in mostra, sbattendo le ali e sollevandosi sul pelo dell'acqua.
