Il termine "regaste", di etimologia dubbia, indica in dialetto un tratto di riva del fiume rialzato e difeso da un muro. La conformazione particolare di questo segmento di lungadige è ancora segnata da un doppio percorso altimetricamente differenziato: quello rialzato, pedonale, ha inizio dirimpetto alla chiesa di San Zeno in Oratorio e offre un magnifico panorama verso il fiume, tanto che già nel 1838 era stata avanzata la proposta di allungare le "regaste" fino alla caserma Catena. Dopo la storica inondazione del 1882 fu qui costruito il primo tratto dei muraglioni che imbrigliano il corso dell'Adige attraverso la città. Prima di tale intervento, il piano stradale era unico e alla riva erano ancorati numerosi mulini natanti, per secoli caratteristici del paesaggio fluviale cittadino.
