Il Mausoleo di Moulay Ismail a Meknes, situato nella Medina sul lato opposto di piazza el Hedim, è l'ultima dimora di uno dei sultani più famosi del Marocco ed è uno dei 3 santuari marocchini, insieme alla tomba di Mohammed V di Rabat e la Medersa Bou Inania in Fez, visitabili anche dai non musulmani. L'ultima dimora del sultano, ricordato per aver scacciato gli spagnoli e gli inglesi dal Marocco, unito il Paese e stabilito la dinastia alawita, è un santuario costituito da una serie di eleganti e tranquille corti, camere decorate con piastrelle zellij e stucchi elaborati, e ornate con 4 pregiati orologi donati dal re di Francia Luigi XIV, a cui si accede dall'imponente porta Bab Mansour. Il mausoleo mostra il meglio dell'artigianato marocchino. Moulay Ismail fu sepolto qui insieme ad una delle sue cinquecento mogli e due dei suoi ottocento figli. #Monumenti
