La foto è stata realizzata a mano libera, in una posizione piuttosto scomoda (il mal di schiena c'è stato, ma ne è valsa la pena, a testa in giù, con un focus bracketing di 22 scatti. Nel cortile di casa ho una siepe che nel tempo è diventata un piccolo ecosistema: passerotti, ragni salticidi e mantidi. Le avevo viste nascere, grandi pochi millimetri. Le avevo persino tenute in mano. Poi, come spesso accade, sono sparite. Le ho cercate, aspettate, e a un certo punto avevo quasi rinunciato all'idea di riuscire a fotografarle da adulte. Un mattino, prima di andare a lavoro, mentre stavo chiudendo il cancello, ho avuto una sensazione precisa: mi stava osservando. Era lì, davanti a me. Come se mi dicesse: se vuoi farlo, fallo ora. Sono rientrato in casa, ho preso l'attrezzatura e ho scattato, cercando di gustare il momento e di mantenere quel rispetto reciproco che sentivo in quell'incontro.
