L' Akiapola'au (Aki) (Hemignathus wilsoni, o munroi) e' uno dei piu' particolari honeycreepers endemici delle Hawaii, minacciato di estinzione (restano meno di 2000 esempari); molto difficile da trovare e fotografare nella foresta. Il becco e' molto singolare: la parte inferiore serve a bucare i vecchi tronchi (come un picchio) alla ricerca di larve, e la parte superiore serve ad estrarre la larva; la femmina depone un solo uovo ogni 2 anni; le cure parentali durano piu' di un anno affinche' il piccolo impari a trovare le larve e ad estrarle dai rami. Un privilegio aver potuto vedere e fotografare questo piccolo grande gioiello della natura, purtroppo sull'orlo della estinzione.
