Pollenzo, importante città romana presso la quale nel 402 d.C. avvenne la celebre battaglia, nel medioevo diviene centro benedettino della Novalesa-Breme oltre che delle monache di Caramagna.Dopo aspre contese – nei secoli XII-XIII – tra i maggiori comuni del basso Piemonte, che portarono alla completa distruzione di fortificazioni risalenti in parte al V secolo, Pollenzo diventa, nel XIV secolo, sede di contea del patrizio visconteo Antonio Porro. Trascorsi pochi decenni, la sua rocca del 1386, di cui resta il donjon, la torre cilindrica alta 46 metri, si trasforma in prestigiosa residenza feudale dei marchesi di Romagnano, i quali, come conti di Pollenzo, nella seconda metà del Cinquecento, avvieranno un profondo rinnovamento del castello su modelli manieristi: questa fase storico-artistica sarà completamente cancellata tra gli anni 1832 e 1847. Il caso di Pollenzo in quegli anni sarà sintomatico della particolare visione romantica del re Carlo Alberto, che con i suoi artisti opererà interventi che comportarono la distruzione di gran parte del borgo di epoca medievale: tutto questo nel nome della celebrazione di un ricreato Medioevo, ma con frequenti e diffusi elementi di contraddizione nella forma classicheggiante più sfarzosa, ideata, per gli interni del castello, da Pelagio Palagi. Le nuove realizzazioni vedono impegnati numerosi artisti oltre al Palagi: l'architetto Ernest Melano, il pittore Bellosio, l'ebanista Moncalvo e lo scultore Gaggini. Con questi artisti, cui il sovrano demandò la riplasmazione dell'intera Pollenzo, fu chiamato a lavorare uno stuolo di altri artisti di grande professionalità, che collaborarono per creare quella immagine medievaleggiante del borgo cara al sovrano, con la sua piazza con fontana e la chiesa di San Vittore goticheggianti, la cascina Albertina, il castello e, fondamentalmente, l'Agenzia. Pollenzo è una delle Residenze Sabaude dichiarate nel 1997 Patrimonio dell'Umanità UNESCO.
