Molto tempo fa ho pubblicato questa foto a colori, questa volta ho tentato l'esperimento del Bianco e nero. Non so se questa versione piacerà, chiedo il Vostro parere. Mi raccomando accetto a scopo pedagogico anche le critiche negative, com'è giusto che sia. Grazie a tutti voi. Nel 1653 il pontefice Innocenzo X Pamphili, sollevò i Rainaldi (padre e figlio) dall'incarico dei lavori, già in avanzata fase di esecuzione,della chiesa di Sant'Agnese in Agone a piazza Navona, affidandoli a Francesco Borromini, il quale progettò l'eliminazione del vestibolo e la costruzione ai lati della facciata di due bassi campanili tali da non ostacolare la vista della cupola, sostenuta da un alto tamburo, culminante con una lanterna contornata da sedici colonne. In seguito, dopo la morte del pontefice, il suo successore Alessandro VII richiamò Carlo Rainaldi che alterò il progetto borrominiano apportando significative modifiche alla lanterna e ai campanili, eliminando così tutta la fantasia espressa dall'architetto ticinese. Nel 1667 Donna Olimpia Maidalchini, vedova del fratello di Innocenzo X, incaricò il Bernini dei lavori di finitura generale, mentre Giovanni Maria Baratta eseguì i campanili e Giuseppe Baratta la scalinata. Le modifiche apportate dal Bernini riguardarono soltanto l'interno.
