La foto del B17 è stata scattata nell'isola di Vis in Croazia a circa 70 mt. di profondità
Credo che questo sia il più bel relitto di un B17 da poter visitare, brevetto tec permettendo.

Sull'isola di Vis si trovava un aeroporto degli alleati durante la 2a guerra mondiale dove il B17 ha cerato di atterrarci per un emergenza. Aveva 3 motori danneggiati dalla contraerea durante una missione sopra Maribor, allora sotto accupazione tedesca. Purtroppo la pista dell'aeroporto era occupata da altri aerei ed è stato costretto a planare in emergenza sul mare antistante l'isola. L'ammaraggio è stato "dolce" e l'aereo è rimasto integro permettendo a tutto l'equipaggio di salvarsi, eccetto uno dei piloti, ferito durante la missione. La deformazione sul muso non è dovuta alla colpo ma probabilmente all'ammarraggio. Più di 50 anni dopo i resti del pilota sono stati recupereti da un team di subacquei USA è riportati con tutti gli onori in patria. |
