Chiesa di San Silvestro Bevagna. - La piazza di Bevagna è il centro su cui converge tutto l'assetto urbanistico e su di essa si affacciano sia le Chiese di San Michele Arcangelo, San Domenico e di San Silvestro nonché il Palazzo dei Consoli, quindi è il cuore pulsante dell'abitato; si è anche ipotizzato che l'attuale piazza sia da identificare nell'antico forum, dove si svolgevano i momenti più significativi della vita della città romana di Mevania. Nel giro di ottantacinque anni i tre edifici principali, le due chiese (San Silvestro e San Michele) ed il palazzo dei Consoli, vennero a strutturare lo spazio interno della piazza. Nel 1195 è completata la chiesa di San Silvestro, poco più tardi San Michele Arcangelo e intorno al 1270 venne costruito il Palazzo dei Consoli che connota la piazza come centro della vita religiosa e civile di Bevagna. La data di edificazione di questa chiesa è bene espressa nella lapide che si può leggere iscritta in una pietra sulla spalla destra del portale che riporta la data 1195. Siamo quindi nel periodo in cui il Ducato Spoletino dipende dall'Impero; la chiesa aveva annesso un convento; Binello ne è il costruttore; il suo nome riappare con quello di Rodolfo nella facciata di S. Michele. Si tratta di architetti e marmorari probabilmente locali che lavorano forse in altre chiese della zona Spoletina e inoltre a S. Feliciano di Foligno e a S. Maria Maggiore di Spello. La chiesa, non avendo goduto di una fortuna storica paragonabile a quella di San Michele Arcangelo, rimase a lungo nell'abbandono, tanto da non essere ristrutturata in forme barocche nel sec. XVIII, come avvenne invece alla collegiata. La chiesa subì le conseguenze del terremoto del 27 ottobre 1831 che procurò danni per un terzo della sua volumetria. Nel 1860 sfuggì al pericolo di essere sacrificata all'allargamento della piazza. Infatti il 9 dicembre 1860 il sindaco Agostino Mattoli propose di demolire una navata della chiesa di S. Silvestro per allargare la piazza e per aprire una strada tra il palazzo comunale e la chiesa, proposta che poi, per fortuna, fu accantonata. Il suo aspetto attuale è il risultato del restauro eseguito dalla Soprintendenza ai Monumenti dell'Umbria, negli anni 1953-54, la trifora ed altri elementi decorativi della facciata furono restaurati nel 1987.
